Babe Ruth – The Mexican (long version)
This track is the original and has been covered an remixed so many times, itself sampling the riff from ‘A Few Dollars More’. Unbelievably, it was released in 1973 – perhaps it was the subsequent remixes and sampling that makes this version sound so good and kept it’s solid drum and bassline alive. It was included on their ‘First Base’ LP.
Jellybean Benitez ripped it off in 1984 with great success, but the version that stuck out (for me) was Orange Lemon’s ‘The Texican’ and ‘Dreams of Santa Ana’ in 1988, creating a massive underground club hit up and down the country.
